This write up is going to end up being a bit brief because I didn’t write it up straight away and we haven’t played in two months due to holidays, work and general life things.
Where last we left our heroes…. They were travelling east to the city of Naggaroth to help out the rather odd Gnome Mage Millhouse Manastorm by securing a number of arcane ingredients from a vendor in the city. Sur Albert had another goal which he shared with the group once they left, that he wanted to speak to and recruit the aid of Lady Di’Marco for Lady Elenna’s claim to rule Kraken’s Fall. Sarin also casually informed the group that there is now a bounty on their heads over the confrontation with her Ex Perfect.
The journey to Naggaroth was easy along the well maintained roads and while the spring frosts have been easing up the rains sadly continue for most of the trip. When at last the city is in sight the party was startled by some farmers sprinting down the road towards them obviously in terror, behind them came charging huge animals not native to this world. Flaming creatures with large bone spikes jutting from their scaled hide, yet these creatures resembled natural beasts like boars, bears and wolves. The battle was brief and the farmers were saved by their quick intervention and Mardark’s glimpses of the future enabling him to shout out a warning just at the right moment to save one of the strangers from a vicious mauling. Fire seemed to have no effect against these creatures but Sur Albert’s blade was more than a match for whatever these creatures were, after they died they turned to ash almost immediately.
The grateful farmer Clarence spoke of how Naggaroth was under attack from Demons appearing out of thin air and how he and his brothers were waiting in line to enter the city when the demon beasts appeared near them (Some party members took this opportunity to ask, since Clarence said he wasn’t going back to the city, if they could have his cart and wears). Clarence spoke of how the guards were slaying the beasts but that people were still dying.
Arriving at the city gates Team Pedant found a long queue of farmers and workmen slowly being aloud in after some sort of check by the city guards as well as a number of still smouldering ash piles, a few dead animals and a few dead bodies. It took awhile standing in queue before they managed to make their way to the front, they learned that Duke Ironheart had ordered all people coming into Naggaroth must stand in a circle of truth (Provided by a tired looking priest of Grabthar) where visitors must swear things like “I do not plan any harm against the city, it’s people or it’s rulers” and “I am not part of a cult” and “I have never summoned demons” this actually caused some debate among the group about if they should lie, but since none of them actually summon demons or have any plans to go on a rampage/overthrow the government they finally passed the checkpoint.
Upon entering the city Sur Albert heard the voice of Millhouse Manastorm telling him “Ah you’ve finally arrived! Seek out a fellow named Finkelstein! He has what I need, do what he wants! Good luck try, not to die” and so asking a few guards where they might find Finkelstein they headed across town to Tinker’s Market and while passing through they stopped at a number of stalls including Fizzlebang’s Wonder Emporium, which had a number of interesting crossbows and other ranged gadgets. While Amon and Hurn bartered with the rather excitable gnome there was an odd noise followed by a lot of screaming.
A huge demonic figure had appeared within the market and casually summoned a ball of fire and tossed it at people as they ran, incinerating them instantly, across the city bells were ringing in warning. Without fear or hesitation they attacked the huge demon lord known as a Pit Boss knowing that this creature is more than capable of slaughtering them all but knowing they had to buy time for the civilians to flee until the city guard arrived to help in the battle.
Help was not long in arriving thankfully as things were looking dire. Much of Mandark’s damaging spells were fire based and ineffective, Sur Albert took the brunt of the attacks and was soon bleeding on the floor though he managed to get a few good hits in, Amon and Hurn both grabbed Fizzelbang’s experiential projectile wonders which while shockingly worked as advertised did nothing to slow or hurt a creature of such power, Durn was still asleep in their cart during those whole encounter still exhausted from whatever religious experience he had, Sarin darted back and forth striking blows but nothing they did seemed more than a minor injury.
But they distracted the demon lord long enough for the Royal Knights of Naggaroth to arrive, these heavily enchanted warriors struck the demon lord with lances that exploded with radiant energy upon impact, supporting these knights came a exhausted looking cleric bearing the markings of Grabthar who summoned great beams of brilliant sunlight. Sur Albert was nearly crushed to death under the charging horses and was caught in the blasts from the lances but Sarin managed to drag him away using a well placed Grease spell.
After the battle they were briefly thanked by the leader of the knights, Duke Sliscus Iornheart, his court wizard and the city’s high priest of Grabthar, for being brave enough to stand against such a terrifying foe. They did not stay long as they had to return to their positions to ready themselves for the next demonic appearance. Duke Ironheart mentions that there is a bounty for any who discover the source of these summoning, he believes a cult is behind it. Mandark got a map from the court wizard of the location of every demon summoned. They were also told to go to the temple of Grabthar upon the Spire of Faith if they needed to buy potions or protections they would be granted access currently only given to the Duke’s guards.
Fizzlebang crawls out from under his stall and is overjoyed that his inventions actually worked and offered Hurn and Amon a 5% discount on all future purchases which they haggle up to 10% and then decided to go around to the surviving stalls and press for a discount from all the vendors. Deciding to move on they finally get round to asking Fizzlebang if he knew where Finkelstein’s shop was, he did so they moved on to there.
Around this time Mandark’s paranoia was getting the better of him so he cast See Invisibility on himself. So he was the only person aware of the strangeness of Finkelstein’s Arcane Reliquary they entered and were greeted by a large stitched together undead construct (complete with neck bolts) and a young gnome lady wearing oversized thick gloves and leather apron who introduced herself as Shelly, one of Finkelstein’s nieces and assistant, the construct got them tea while they waited. After awhile a strange screeching sound, an explosion from somewhere in the house and a huge amount of oddly coloured smoke, Finkelstein finally arrived. He had what Manastorm wanted and would happily sell it in exchange for 30,000 gold or if they would agree to gather a few SIMPLE ingredients for him, which he would not discuss till they all signed a NDA (Mandark was able to see the invisible small print stating that this scroll was cursed and anyone who mocked Finkelstein about his size or race would gain some rather unpleasant genital diseases. There was a lot of arguing and haggling and they signed a non-cursed version)
Finkelstein wanted:
A Lich’s Phylactery, he had a probable location of one.
A few Beholder Eyes/a bunch of lesser beholder eyes.
A Naga Corpse
A Hill Giant Body
and a bunch of other things but I currently can’t find my notes and it’s been 2 months.
The party went and rested in an inn named The Staggering Soldiers and asked more about the demon attacks, no one is sure of where they are coming from but there has been strange events happening just before they turned up. The graveyards outside the city have had sightings of the undead and one of the mines within the city had been shut down last week because miners had gone missing and there had also been undead sighted. Mandark studied the map and with a nat 20 pinpointed the focal point of all the summoning… which matches up with the mine that was shut down last week and that’s where we left things.

Ok so that ended up being a lot longer than I expected. Session was fun though I should have stuck to my original idea of having the Demon Lord appear further away… but there was a lot of crap on the table so I just placed him close the group. Further away would have given them more of a choice, since they could have escaped easily, not that they would with a pally but still. Sadly didn’t get any Saturday Sessions sorted out and nothing in January but looking forward to tomorrow.
