When last we left our heroes… they were resting the night in “The Staggering Solider” come the morning they found the innkeeper, an elderly human woman by the name of Meredith, knocking on their doors telling them it was time for breakfast and that their extremely tall companion had already left the inn leaving behind a large pile of all the stuff in the bag of holding as well as a note.
“Got 2 Go. Mission from God!. C U soon. – Durn”
Sarin was particularly perturbed to see Durn had taken the Bag of Holding with him, while everyone went down stairs for some porridge and eggs Amon thought it best to clean up all the mess. The morning was filled with a flurry of activity as Mandark tried to discover the frequency between demonic summoning events and finding many conflicting rumours but believing that there has been a steady increase in attacks, also that the attacks seem random both in location and creature summoned with the beasts looking confused and having no clear goal and that the church had sent down a number of warriors the same day the Iron mine reported sightings of undead last week as well as a group of adventures following a few days later, none had yet returned.
Sur Albert sent the Inn’s porter to buy him a small box, wax, parchment and other things so he could write out a letter to Lady Di’Marco. Introducing himself, asking for an audience because of their mutual friend who owns the locket sent with the letter.
The party decided that heading to the Temple of Grabthar high upon the hill known as the Spire of Faith would be their best bet and so they headed off. Much of the hillside appeared to be dedicated to churches to various Gods, Amon excused himself to go off to pray at a small almost empty shrine which had only a few candles, the church of Grabthar was by far the biggest and was ringed with armed guards bearing Grabthar’s signature hammer as well as many worshipers coming to pray and seek comfort in these dangerous times.
Inside the church dubbed “The Shield of Grabthar” they saw a great number of priests offering support and guidance as well as a few tending wounds. Mandark’s was constantly scanning the room for hidden demonic infiltration or other signs of treachery, Sur Albert stood around looking tough, Hern his usual quiet self but Sarin quickly identified the cleric in charge a man named Brother Spenzar.
Brother Spenzar was arguing with a rather irate Halfling who was frustrated because he was being denied entry into the Iron mine that had been closed down. Noticing the party Brother Spenzar seemed to recognise them and told the Halfling “They are allowed in, go bother them!” and so the party met Tom O’ Thunders priest of Vedrungr, The Storm Dragon, who started badgering them immediately. Brother Spenzar told them to enter further into the church and speak to the master smith Susan Hammerton (Named after the great Susan Stormbringer or so the party proclaimed) buying a number of healing potions and some protecting from evil potions (all the while having Tom O’ Thunders both nagging them to hurry up and refusing to do any form of initiation ceremonies, demanding a halfing do cartwheels and such) Susan Hammerton also offered to fix up Sur Albert’s armour since it was looking rather bashed up but it would take a day.
So the group decided to do some shopping while they waited for the armour to be mended, much to the dismay of their new companion. Sarin and Tom went to the Kings Market in search of a jewellers for some small diamonds, since Tom was convinced that fate required him to have diamonds at hand to stave off death from the party if needed, the haggling did not go well. Hurn wondered off looking for a contact from his abbey while Amon found a shop which sold weapons of magical power and had a cold welcome due to his apparent lack of wealth but did spy a few bows he might come back for. Mandark spent the day asking questions of the gate guards to see if anyone had left the city either just before the demons turned up or just after that might raise suspicion, it turns out a number of farmhands from the same farm hadn’t been back since leaving the same day the demons turned up and he marked down the farms location for further investigation.
The next morning they collected Sur Albert’s armour, fitting better than it ever had before, and made their way down to the Iron mine. The news that at least three more residence of the city had died last night before the guards could arrive to slay the demons didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits. After a brief chat with the mines foreman Susan Smeltsure, seems a common name among dwarves, and being directed to the bottom of the mine they went down into the dark. Hurn seemingly distracted told the others he would catch up with them in the mine and then left quickly but he didn’t seem worried just interested in something else. The mine was an old but still in use and they found it to be extremely well signed and well maintained scaffolding and walk ways were in place where required. As they descended into the depths of the mine a ghostly wail echoed up from below causing them to proceed with greater caution until they reached the end of the mine shaft, where they had dug into a huge underground cavern. Another ghostly wail speaking in a language which they believed to be an old Drazi dialect sent chills down every spine yet they were unafraid by its vague warnings of peril.
The miners had set winches and rope ladders at the hole and after Tom dropped a small glowing rock down the 90 or so foot drop for a test they decided to start heading down, or at least Amon (Plus a lowered and unhappy pet), Sur, Tom went down first while Sarin and Mandark both did rituals enabling them to understand languages. The cave looked natural but the miners had placed a handrail down to an apparent rock slide which had been dug out, after a few glowing rocks had been thrown around the place and Amon had shot a number of force arrows into the further reaches of the cave to lighten the way as he peered around they finally drew the attention of three Basilisks and a extremely dangerous battle ensued while Sarin and Mandark were halfway down the ladder, Sarin’s bladesong helped her be nimble enough to slide down and jump off near the bottom while Mandark just muttered something about how people always took the hard way as he dropped off using his magic to slow his fall.
The battle was brief but by the end of it Tom O’ Thunders and Satan had both been turned to stone, luckily Sarin’s knowledge of doomed adventuring parties knew to smear the basilisk blood upon them to restore them. Tom O’ Thunders went down into the basilisk den and found the remains of a stone body with a strange looking weapon that had resisted the stone effect, a Dilgar throwing disk of some magical nature. A very quick and rather dangerous test proved that this was in fact one of those returning Dilgar weapons that could be quite risky to use untrained.
Traveling down to the rock slide and the tunnel they found it to be worked stone which split into three ways, Amon going first and then the rest following after he moved on. The first way showed a short corridor ending with a familiar stone door, the fact that the entire corridor had splattered body parts from a person who seemed to have just exploded and a very large chalk warning on the floor to pass no further. The middle passage was caved in but they spotted an armoured hand underneath. Amon walked down the third passage into a room which appeared to be another of these strange teleportation entrance ways that they had found in the Obsidian sanctum. Beyond that some form of cloak room with a bunch of empty hooks with signs saying not to proceed without wearing a visitor’s pass or travelling with a visitor pass. Amon took a rotted cloak from the wall and covering himself he continued forward until he found a sun lit garden complete with a single tree and bench, the air seem fresh, blue sky above that must be some sort of illusion, seeing three more doors ahead Amon took a seat and waited.
While Amon was forging ahead Tom and Sur started digging out the body and Sarin and Mandark went looking for Amon stopping for a moment in the teleportation room. Tom O’ Thunders did a full check of this fellow who seemed to be dead but a few days, most likely an adventurer and not a priest by his garb, he found a rune covered iron ring on the corpse which required a bit of force and a bit of spit and sucking to lubricate it up enough to remove sadly this made the heroic Sur Albert violently ill, also tied to the corpses inner thigh Tom found a small bag with rubies as well as the more obvious coin pouch. Sur Albert went looking for the others as soon as Tom started poking around the exploded corpse.
Believing themselves to be in yet another of Garak the Destroyers sanctum they ventured forth, leaving Tom O’ Thunders poking body parts with a large 2 handed sword so as not to trigger any traps, but no sooner had they disregarded the dire warnings of peril above the doors toward any who venture without a visitors pass then the lovely grass behind them erupted as a bone Naga immerged to do battle… that was over extremely quickly with Sarin causing it to fall over and over again due to grease (two nat 1’s in the first two rounds) and only Sarin being hit by a magical blast of lighting which she dodged most of casting a quick elemental absorbing spell taking the brunt of the damage. Albert’s repaired armour was more than sufficient and Mandark’s flickering visions from the night before allowed him to dodge before he even realised what was happening and so by the time Tom O’ Thunders ran into the room the fight was over.
Though happily Finklestine was after Naga fangs, so triggering a guardian wasn’t so bad.

I FINALLY got to use my Basilisk model, though I only had one, but sadly I didn’t have a Bone Naga model. Some players have expressed worry over Amon’s tendency to scout ahead since if he had opened another door the Naga would have attacked him while alone and may well have killed him before the party could intervene.
Durn has been unable to play since October due to real life interfering with nerdy gaming so I’ve invited another player to join the game. This does mean that if life settles down a bit I may end up with seven players but that just means I’ll have to work a bit harder to keep things moving along.
Also… fucking Grease spell once again proves to be extremely effective Vs my bad rolling.
Hopefully will be playing on the 18th as a Saturday catch up game which is great as I have a lot of fun exciting things planned for this place and can’t wait to see people’s reactions.
