We find our party of adventurers; Feanaro a High Elf Master of Evocation who left Minbar in disgrace for his academically leanings, Aziel a human artisan continuing his training in crafting by practicing the arts of a fighter, Aiken a Wood Elf wondering searching for the lost goblin tomb of Mumrar, Corwin a tiefling trained as a blood hunter sworn to hunt down and destroy the evil that slaughtered his family, a Dwarf named Grimbal on a quest to regain his honour by dying in glorious battle against a truly worthy foe, a Halforc named Torvad Hax left wondering the world after his training in the arcane arts was left incomplete due to his masters death at the battle of the whispering craig.
While they have worked together to deal with some smugglers near the town of Windshear and an uneventful few weeks escorting a caravan up to the Sleeping Vale the group still haven’t yet fully formed the bonds of comradely that make separate random bands of mercenaries from those who will become legends for generations to come.
Upon arriving at the Sleeping vale there was already a messenger waiting for Corwin, who went off to visit the Abby of the Dreamer and speak to its abbot. He returned quickly with a young farmer named Higgins and a job for the party, chase after a Dwarf thief by the name of Son’ka Goldtouch and destroy the tome that was stolen and so off they travelled north to the village of Blackwater.
(Which is actually where we start our campaign) While packing up the camp in the frosty spring dawn the group discuss their plan and what they know, Torvad Hax tells how he’s heard of this thief back when he lived in Drazi, Son’ka is rather famously known for stealing jewels from rich nobles and it seems unlikely that he would steal a tome made from humanoid skin, Grimbal determined that any Dwarf who has disgraced himself by thievery needed to be punished regardless of what he stole. While discussing how best to approach the village of Blackwater Aiken decided to head off down forcing the others to finish packing up quickly and head after him.
The villagers of Blackwater were already up and about despite this early hour and the mayor Donald was standing by the gate talking with another man named Daniels. The mayor was quick to greet them and pass Aiken a sack of gold as the first half of the payment promised to “The Barons Men” Feanaro stepped up and quickly assured Donald that they would take care of the problem… just what was the problem again? While Feanaro and the others tried to find out what was wrong while not admitting to having no idea who the Baron was Aiken went off into the village to spend his newfound sack of gold.
It seems that over the last few weeks goblins have been pestering the town raiding from the nearby ruins of Darkshire, north along the lake, but it has gotten worse these last few days as the goblins seem to have riled up the restless sprits within Darkshire and the undead had been seen wondering nearby and the local Baron’s constable Chester and his halforc and orc fighters wouldn’t go anywhere near the ruins. The mayor seemed quite upset that the party hadn’t been told what to expect as he was told the Baron would be sending specialists in dealing with the undead.
Blackwater turned out to be a small village with only one drinking establishment, Aiken quickly found his way there, named Borris' beauties where he spent some of the reward money on one of the hostess to hire a room for a few hours of relaxation. The rest of the group came looking for Aiken, stopping briefly to note the rotting corpse hanging from hooks in the middle of the village square (Punishment for not paying the Baron’s Taxes) they split up to find information on Son’ka. Torvad Hax stayed outside with Higgins keeping an eye on things and the cluster of orcs wearing a red sash that had been watching the party since they came to town; Corwin used his demonically gifted magic to help intimidate some locals drinking; Aiken was busy pumping his hostess for information about any Dwarf that visited this establishment; Aziel went to the nearby smithy to strike up a friendly conversation and see what he knew; Grimbol had an ale and spoke briefly to the bartender but then his annoyance for Aiken wasting time upstairs became too much and he stormed up their kicking in a few doors until he found Aiken otherwise occupied. Yelling at him to hurry up he grabbed Aiken’s clothes and equipment and stormed back out to the balcony to wait.
Aiken stormed out a few minutes later wearing, some far too small and slightly torn while trying to wear, lingerie and an argument arupted between the two. The local orc bouncer intervened which was enough to send Grimbol into a rage and leaping over the banister to teach that bouncer to watch his tone. Not to be outdone Aiken leapt after Grimbol running past him to kick the bouncer squarely in between his legs, causing less damage then Aiken would have liked. Feanaro took this opportunity to summon up his arcane power causing the bouncer to sicken and his flesh to start to rot. Yelling how there was no need to actually do real harm Grimbol ran forwards and smacked the extremely wounded bouncer in the face with a mostly full bag of coins knocking him out and a few teeth loose.
Borris the owner of the establishment turned up with more bouncers and the barons men from across the road also came running at the sounds of violence. Since no one had died Borris accepted twenty gold as payment for the damages caused and the party would leave the village. Once outside they all discussed what they had learned, that Son’ka was here a few days ago but ran out of Borris' beauties after not paying for the services of a young lady named Misty and he was riding north. And since the ruins were to the north and the undead only started showing up around the same time as a dwarf with a stolen evil tome went that direction it was agreed that they would go and do the job they had already taken payment for and head towards Darkshire.
Once they got close to Darkshire Corwin and Aiken scouted forward and quickly heard some goblins talking within the ruins heading back the agreed to creep forward again this time with Aziel to take out any sentries while the others approached waited a few moments and then approached. The three of them managed to sneak forward close enough to see a group of goblins arguing over a chest, sadly Cowin and Aiken spent too long discussing what to do and the goblins finally spotted that intruders were close. The battle that followed was very messy with over half the party being wounded then falling afoul of a goblin shaman’s sleep magic, the goblin leader was slain and so were the majority of his minions but the shaman and a few others managed to run into the still mostly standing temple to call out jeers and shoot an arrow or two at the party.
And that’s where we left off.
